Chess clubs in Porto and the towns around it 15

The clubs of the Porto area are a mix of old chess societies, sections of sports clubs and school teams. In the city, the Grupo de Xadrez do Porto holds internal tournaments at its own premises and runs long series named after the world champions, and Sport Musas e Benfica keeps a chess team alongside its yearly events. Maia has an academy with competitive teams and a training centre, Vila Nova de Gaia an academy that has won the national league, and Matosinhos several clubs between Leça da Palmeira and Senhora da Hora.

Further from the centre, a football club in Recarei and a golf club in Paredes organise their own tournaments, a college in Santo Tirso holds a Three Kings rapid each January, and clubs in São João da Madeira and Cucujães belong to the Aveiro association. School clubs are listed with the rest. Few of these clubs publish a weekly club night or say whether visitors may walk in, so write to the club first; where an address or email is known, the card shows it.
